Zuurberg Edu Care is the brainchild of Nazley Davids, a Cape Town native, who saw how the parents of Heideveld were struggling to find childcare that ticked both of the boxes: genuine care, and actual education.
When Nazley founded Zuurberg in 2014, certainly there were other institutions around that ticked the first box. Athlone – known for its abundance of gang-related crimes – is no place for children to be left alone in, and there is no shortage of day-cares and crèches around. Parents weren’t struggling to find someone to look after their pre-school-aged children; they were struggling to find places that did it well.
Nazley, who not only has an immense passion for working with children but is qualified to do so, having completed her level 5 in Early Childhood Development at the College of Cape Town.
Of the school’s 20 beneficiaries, 15 are Educare students between 1.5 and 5 years old (who are divided into two classes), and 5 are aftercare students, who range from 6 to 9. The Educare students are given breakfast, lunch, and snacks, and follow a daily routine of various educational activities.
All this takes place on Nazley’s own property, where two donated containers on the grounds serve as classrooms. Though these are functional enough, Nazley and her team worry about their playground – or lack thereof. All of the equipment is from creches in the area that closed down, and looks it. The sandy yard is inhospitable to what the team so believes their students need: to play like children without worries.
A brewing problem is that many parents can no longer afford to pay the R600 monthly school fee, and numbers are gradually dwindling. The team’s biggest dream is to be able to keep Athlone’s young ones safe, whether their parents can afford it or not, and to be able to offer them a beautiful play area to grow up in. Other concerns are their bathrooms (which needs renovating), and a lack of proper security.
